Cantonese Travelogue - Tang Dynasty Architecture (ENGLISH)
Cantonese Travelogue - Tang Dynasty Architecture (ENGLISH)
The two hosts, having traveled from Hong Kong, will venture beyond Nara to explore Kyoto and Osaka in this episode. Kyoto, with its ancient charm, is well-known to many in Hong Kong. Since the hosts aim to provide a unique and in-depth experience, the places they visit will be different from the usual tourist spots. They will take viewers away from the hustle and bustle to the outskirts of Kyoto, starting with a visit to a chestnut orchard to pick chestnuts. Next, they'll head to the famous Uji tea area, where they will participate in tea picking and a soba noodle-making experience. For cultural experiences, they will take part in a sumi ink-making workshop, highlighting the influence of Chinese culture. Interestingly, the works of famous Tang dynasty poets like Li Bai and Du Fu were highly regarded by the Japanese. Traveling is not just about sightseeing but also about enjoying food and shopping. The hosts will visit a 120-year-old shop that originally specialized in stage makeup products for geishas. They will also discover that the face oil paper we commonly use today was invented by this very company. As a nation adept at absorbing foreign cultures, Japan has embraced not only Chinese culture but also jazz music, which has a history of over a century in the country. Although the younger generation now shows less enthusiasm for jazz than previous generations, the music-loving hosts will still visit a jazz live house to experience the lingering charm of jazz.

Backchat
Backchat
On Wednesday's Backchat, we explored how Hong Kong can tap into the potential of social media, after e-commerce platform giant Xiaohongshu opened an office in the city, its first outside the mainland. Financial Secretary Paul Chan says the new office would “enhance the visibility of Hong Kong’s tourism, retail, dining and creative industries”. We spoke to experts to learn more about the opportunity. After the break, we shifted our focus to traditional Chinese medicine. The Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong has partnered with Western Sydney University to strengthen global collaboration in the field and foster dialogue between Eastern and Western practices. We heard from the head of the hospital. And finally, the Chinese University of Hong Kong has managed to significantly reduce electricity consumption in air-conditioning in its Dining Hall. We spoke to the person behind the project to find out how that's being done. 9:05am-9:30am: Xiaohongshu's Hong Kong office opening 9:05am-9:30am: Eugene Chan, social media scholar and Assistant Professor at the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) 9:05am-9:30am: Brian Yeung, Co-Founder of Brandstorm Communications 9:32am-9:39am: Boosting Chinese medicine development 9:32am-9:39am: Bian Zhaoxiang, Hospital Chief Executive of the Chinese Medicine Hospital 9:39am-10:00am: CUHK's energy-saving aircon system 9:39am-10:00am: Yam Yeung, Research Professor at the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
